Germany pip Australia 3-2, storm into Champions Trophy final

Olympic champion Germany stormed into the final of the Hero Hockey Champions Trophy after they beat defending champion Australia by 3-2 goals in a nail-biting first semi-final at Kalinga Stadium in the Odisha capital this afternoon.

The new-look Germany team, having seven players from the 2013 Junior World Cup squad, displayed attacking game and scored two goals in the first quarter through Timur Cruz and Mats Grambusch.

A minute after half-time, Germany scored the third goal through Florian Fuchs.

However, Australia launched the counter attack and scored the first goal through Ciriello in the 34th minute. Seven minutes later, Nick Budgeon scored the second goal.

But they failed to score the equaliser as they were foiled by the German defenders.

In the final, Germany will meet the winner of the second semi-finals between India and Pakistan which is currently underway.
