Sambalpur, May 11:

National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has accredited Odisha’s Gangadhar Meher College (Autonomous), Sambalpur with its highest grade of ‘A’. A formal announcement in this regard was made yesterday.

GM College

The college had secured 3.26 out of 4 points during NAAC inspections and the A grade accreditation was expected. NAAC expert committee had found the infrastructure and teaching methods of the college to be of high quality.

The college would now be eligible to receive more funds from the University Grants Commission (UGC) for development of its infrastructure after this accreditation.

NAAC team has also recommended to the Central Government to accord university status to GM College.

It may be noted that NAAC team had visited the college in 2005 when it was accredited ‘B’ Grade. Three successive ‘B’ Grade accreditation usually means funds under the College with Potential for Excellence (CPE) get stopped. This would have caused a lot of difficulties in developing infrastructure for the college.

However, GM College has made significant improvements in infrastructure development and quality of education since 2005 making NAAC accredit it with ‘A’ grade.

A NAAC team chaired by former VC of Bharti Darshan University Thanga Mutthu and consisting of retired professor of Kakatiya University Pramila Devi and BS Sharma of Assam had visited the college on March 25 and inspected the college, hostel, library and examination control cell.

They had separate meetings with former students and students separately. Another round of meeting was also held with the college authorities regarding the examination process.

NAAC team had expressed satisfaction with the ultra modern facilities in the library and availability of a large number books leading to their decision to accord the college with ‘A’ grade.

This prestigious accreditation, accorded only to the best of the institutions in the country, comes as another feather in the cap of the renowned GM College.
