Locals had leveled a volley of charges against the erring unit accusing it of “perpetrating the worst form of air and water pollution” and sought the SPCB’s intervention in the matter.

The private sector unit was found guilty of contravening the provisions of Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981. The company has been asked to close down its operations and furnish a compliance report to the SPCB without delay, sources said.

Earlier it had been served a show cause notice asking it to explain  its lopsided and ineffective pollution control mechanism.

“The reply by the plant to our notice was not satisfactory and it also did not mend its ways,” said SPCB regional officer (Paradip) Prasant Kumar Kar.
