An unidentified miscreant on Thursday looted gold ornaments worth Rs 20 lakhs from a jewellery shop at Badambadi Chhack in VSS Nagar under Saheed Nagar police limits here, after immobilising the owner by drugging him.

The matter came to light after the shop owner’s son Deepak Senapati lodged a complaint with local police station late on Thursday night.

According to the complainant, a man came to KDM Jewellers owned by Kailash Chandra Senapati, seeking to exchange a 30 gram gold biscuit with a gold chain of the same weight. However, the miscreant was not satisfied with the length of the gold chain given to him and wanted it shortened.

To fulfill his demand, the shop owner Kailash asked his son Deepak to go to their workshop which is at a distance from his shop to make necessary changes. Within the 20 minutes time taken by Deepak to return to the shop with the shortened necklace, the unidentified customer had managed to drug Kailash with a cold drink and disappear with gold ornaments worth Rs 20 lakh from the shop.

Sahid Nagar police are investigating into the matter.
