Govt official beaten to death in Odisha after vehicle runs over villager

Bangriposi: A surveyor engaged in the Piped Water Scheme of the Government of India was beaten to death after a Scorpio vehicle in which the official was traveling ran over a villager in Mayurbhanj district today afternoon.

The Surveyor, Satyanarayan Nanda aged 45 accompanied by another officer Phula Chandra Sharma from Uttar Pradesh was going towards Bangriposi in the Scorpio vehicle. At around 12 noon, the vehicle hit a two-wheeler, Harihar Sethi near Katara under Bangriposi police station killing him on the spot.

Following the death of the villager, locals drag the two officials out of the vehicle and thrashed them. They also took the driver as a hostage and blocked the Bangriposi-Jharpokharia State Highway-49 demanding compensation for the family of the deceased villager.

After being informed, the police reached the spot and rescued the two officials in critical condition. Nanda and Sharma were admitted to the Baripada hospital. However, Nanda succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

The police were deployed in the area to maintain law and order. Till filing of this report, the driver who was taken hostage was not rescued.
