Gudi Padwa is the Marathi New Year. It is the New Year as per the luni-solar Chaitradi Hindu calendar.

Gudi padwa falls on Chaitra Shuddha Padyami (Pardipada tithi) of Shukla paksha in the month of Chaitra.

Pratipada Tithi Begins: April 01, 2022 11:54 AM.

Pratipada Tithi Ends: April 02, 2022 11:58 AM.

Significance: Gudi Padwa marks the arrival of Spring season. Farming community, especially in Maharashtra and Goa, celebrates Gudi Padwa as harvest festival.

It marks the end of Rabi season and the beginning of Kharif. According to mythology, Lord Brahma created the universe on this day.

Rituals: In Maharashtra, a traditional ‘gudi’ is found placed in every household. It is a long bamboo stick which is adorned with a beautiful green or yellow cloth ornamented with brocade work. Over this, an inverted copper pot, some neem leaves, mango leaves, red flowers and sugar crystals are placed.

It is placed on the right side of the house, especially at window or terrace so that it is visible to everyone around.

It is believed that this ritual keeps evil away and brings good fortune and prosperity at home.

Houses are decorated with rangoli on this day while people wear new clothes.

Feasting is an important part of Gudi Padwa as special dishes are prepared on this day.

People start the day by consuming a special paste that contains neem leaf extract, tamarind and jaggery.

Other dishes prepared are Shrikhand, Puran Poli, Kanangachi kheer and Sanna.
