Hirakud Dam closes six more gates; floodwater in Mahanadi River recedes

Sambalpur: Hirakud Dam authorities today closed six more sluice gates as per an operation procedure after reviewing flood situation in Mahanadi River in lower catchment areas.

With closure of six more gates, the floodwaters are being discharged through 18 sluice gates from the reservoir.

Earlier in the morning, four gates were closed following which the water level receded at the Hirakud Dam. By 10.00 AM today, the water level at the dam was 628.17 ft.

The water level at Mundali barrage in Cuttack district is also stable after floodwaters released from Hirakud reservoir reached there yesterday night.

Meanwhile, the floodwater in Mahanadi River receded today as compared to yesterday, informed Engineer-in-Chief, Water Resources Department.

However, many villages in low-lying areas in Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Khordha and Puri districts are still inundated by water following incessant rain caused by Deep Depression over Bay of Bengal this week.
