Hirakud dam in Odisha opens two gates to release excess inflow

Following heavy rains in the upper catchment of Mahanadi river, the authorities of the Hirakud dam at Burla in Odisha’s Sambalpur district today opened two gates.

Talking to the media, chief engineer, Hirakud dam, Biswajit Mohanty said keeping the water level of the reservoir which was 623.25 feet as against the optimum capacity of 630 feet, the dam authorities opened two gates in the morning to ensure that the water level remains at its present level.

“Since there has been heavy rains in the upper catchments of the river, we have decided to open two more gates later in the day”, Mohanty added.
