Hirakud to release first floodwaters tomorrow

Hirakud dam will be releasing this season’s first floodwaters into the Mahanadi systemon Friday. According to the Hirakud dam authorities, incessant rains upstream have led to the constant rise in the reservoir’s water level. The step is being taken to avoid any emergency situation arising out of the heavy inflow. Sluice gates of the dam will be opened anytime between quarter to noon and one in the afternoon on Friday, Dam authorities said.

The reservoir’s water level on Wednesday stood at 608.43.

Apprehending possible damage to life and property downstream, Revenue Divisional Commissioners of Sambalpur, Cuttack, and Brahmapur and district collectors of Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Angul, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Phulbani, Khurda, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Puri as well as secretary Water Resources department have been notified about the release.

Rainfall of 17.05 mm was recorded by Wednesday evening in the upstream areas .
