History-sheeter nabbed after police encounter in Puri

Puri: Hours after attacking two women in Puri town, the dreaded criminal involved in the attacks was nabbed following an encounter with the Puri district police today evening.

Based on a tip-off, a team of police raided a place in Chandanpur to apprehend the criminal, Biju Behera. The police asked Behera to surrender before the police. But he fired two rounds at the police team. In retaliation, the police fired at Behera, a habitual offender.

He also engaged in a tussle with the police team during which a Sub Inspector has been injured.
Behera has sustained a bullet injury in his left leg and was admitted to the hospital.

During midnight hours today, Behera along with accomplice Kalia Muduli reached the house of Jitendra Kumar Sahu at Narendrakona, near ITI College. Behera tried to kill Sahu by firing at him after an argument over some monetary dispute. However, Behera missed the target as Sahu’s wife Sakuntala pushed Sahu away to save him.

Sahu’s wife sustained a bullet injury and was rushed to the hospital.

After committing the crime, Behera and his accomplice fled the spot. They then went to the house of Tuni Behera at Matitota the same night, and assaulted the woman and son Kartika Behera causing grievous injuries. The two criminals then fled the spot fearing being caught.

Puri SP KV Singh formed four teams to trace and apprehend the accused.

The police team also seized a pistol that was used in the crime at Narendrakona, three rounds of bullets and a motorcycle from the accused.

Two cases have been registered against the accused at Kumbharpada and Baselisahi police stations.
