Homosexuality: Two Odisha women sign agreement for living together

Kendrapara: After historic section 377 verdict by the Supreme Court last year, two women set an example for the homosexuals in Odisha by signing an agreement at a local court here in the district to continue their live-in relationship.

According to reports, Sabitri Parida (27), daughter of Pravakar Parida and resident of Mahakalpada area in Kendrapara district and Monalisa Nayak from Pattamundai area of the same district came to the court seeking permission for living together.

The agreement was executed in presence of the counsel and witnesses at a local court in Kendrapara on Saturday.

“The two women have been living together in Cuttack for a long time. I read the terms and conditions in the agreement, which was not against the law. As the Supreme Court has already decriminalized homosexuality, their live-in relationship does not violate any law,” said Advocate Asutosh Mohanty, who executed the agreement.

“As they are adults, their families cannot oppose their relationship. They signed an agreement here because they want to live together in upcoming days,” he added.

Notably, the apex court on Sept 6, 2018, decriminalized homosexuality by declaring Section 377 of the IPC ‘unconstitutional’.

With the verdict, the sexual activity between people of the same gender is now legal in the country.
