Honour killing: HC upholds life term for father

“Who says marriages are made in heaven, they are made by the parents and if sought to be made contrary to their wishes, the consequence are murder,” said the Delhi High Court while upholding the life sentence to a father in an honour killing.

Justice Pradeep Nandrajog and Mukta Gupta Oct 1 upheld the life sentence to Onkar, who was convicted of murdering his 20-year-old daughter for her decision to marry a man of her choice.

Onkar had moved the high court challenging trial court order May 28 2011 saying his daughter had committed suicide because she had physical relations with the man she loved and he had refused to marry her.

Dismissing Onkar’s appeal, the court remarked that if youths made decision contrary to their parents’ wishes on the issue of marriage, the consequence are as those met by the daughter of Onkar.

The bench also said: “The conduct of deceased not being to the liking of Onkar, the fate that ensued for her, a homicidal death is evident from the post-mortem report. In view of the evidence on record we upheld the conviction and order on sentence passed by the trial court. Appeal is dismissed. The appellant will suffer the remaining sentence.”

As per the prosecution, Onkar’s daughter and Sandeep were in relationship for four years. They wanted to get married but Onkar did not agree as they belonged to the same village and the same community.

The couple eloped to get married. Next day while they were about to leave for the court for marriage, their parents called them and asked them to come home and assured to get them married.

While taking her daughter home, Onkar had assured that he would not cause any harm to her. Next day, on Sep 4, 2009 Meenu had died, said police.
