Honour killing! Minor girl found hanging with limbs tied in Odisha capital

Bhubaneswar: In a suspected case of honour killing, a Class-10 girl was found hanging from a tree on premises of her house with hands and legs tied in Dumduma area under Khandagiri police limits here on Sunday night.

However, family members of the deceased girl lodged a written complaint with Khandagiri police yesterday alleging that some miscreants killed her and later hanged her body from the tree to give it a suicide look. Police are investigating the death from different aspects besides detaining a local youth for interrogation.

The deceased girl, daughter Maina Jena of Jajpur, had appeared in the annual Matric  Examination this year. Maina is a father of five children including three daughters. While his elder daughter is married, rest members of the family reside in Dumduma Phase II here.

Sources said the girl was quite popular in the locality since she used to sing in different cultural programmes.  A pal of gloom descended on the locality soon after her death.  While the family including her father, mother Ranjulata and brother Soumya Ranjan alleged that some miscreants strangulated her to death before hanging her from the tree, locals, on the other hand, suspect foul play.

The neighbours stated that the family got into verbal duel quite often over the girl’s love affair. The family had been opposing her relationship with a youth and an altercation had erupted on the fateful night. Moreover, the towel with which her legs were tied was of her father, claimed a local.

On the basis of circumstantial evidence and preliminary investigation, police suspect it to be a case of honour killing. Inspector Rashmi Ranjan Mohapatra said the family had recovered the body before police reached the spot and the girl had no other injury mark on her body. And the detained youth has confessed his love for the girl.

“The body has been sent for post-mortem. The reason behind her death can be ascertained once the report comes in,” the Inspector said.

On the contrary, a top police official set aside the honour killing angle and termed it a case of suicide.

“Family members of a girl have filed a case of murder with Khandagiri police station. A case under Sec 302 of IPC has been registered. As reported in media that it’s a case of honour killing, preliminary investigation reveals that it’s a case of suicide. Further investigation is on. We are awaiting the post-mortem report. Statements will be recorded and we can arrive at any conclusion after that,” Bhubaneswar DCP Umashankar Dash said.
