Hospital apathy kills pregnant woman, unborn child in Odisha capital

Bhubaneswar, June 30:

The death of a destitute pregnant woman, along with her unborn child,  allegedly after she remained unattended for hours in the Capital Hospital here late on Sunday night, is the latest in a series of incidents of gross apathy in this premier government hospital in the Odisha capital.

The woman had been rescued and admitted to the hospital by a social service organization earlier in the day.

The pregnant woman, who had been admitted to capital hospital on Saturday and had been sent to the SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH), Cuttack through a 108 ambulance after her condition deteriorated, was mysteriously found groaning in pain in a serious condition near the Nayapalli Durga Puja Mandap on Sunday before being rescued.

Records at the Capital Hospital confirmed that the destitute pregnant woman from Astaranga area in Puri district was admitted to the Capital Hospital here on Saturday and had been referred to the SCBMCH the same day after her condition turned serious.

The woman was found writhing in pain near the Nayapalli Durga Puja Mandap by some eunuchs, who informed the Ruchika Helpline. The latter rescued the woman and admitted her again to Capital Hospital at about 5 pm on Sunday.

“By that time, the child in her womb was already dead and she died at 11 pm after remaining unattended for six long hours, battling for her life in a critical condition. Her death was caused solely due to neglect in treatment,”alleged Rasna Mahapatra, member, Ruchika Helpline.

A four-member team of the State Commission for Women (SCW) led by its chairperson Lopamudra Buxipatra visited the Capital Hospital today to conduct an inquiry into the matter. The team sought documents from the hospital authorities and interrogated deputy director of Capital Hospital, Dr Binod Mishra and several other doctors and officials of Capital Hospital.

Dr Mishra said action will be taken against those found guilty after an inquiry.
