Huge narcotic haul during raid in Jharpada jail

Less than a week after the raid at the Choudwar Central Jail, commissionerate police conducted a surprise raid inside the Jharpada special jail in Odisha capital early this morning and seized a huge amount of narcotic substances.

Acting on tip-off, an Additional DCP, two ACPs, five Inspectors, 10 sub-inspectors, along with two platoons of police forces, conducted an extensive search operation inside the jail between 5-7 am today. The raid was supervised by DCP Bhubaneswar Satyabrata Bhoi.

During the raid, police have recovered 15 packets of tobacco (khaini), 10 packets of cigarettes, several packets of bidi and other narcotic substances  apparently used by the prisoners.

“It is clear that the prisoners  used to consume these narcotic substance. We conducted the raid on the direction of DCP today. This surprise raid will continue till Dussehera,” said Inspector-in-charge of Laxmisagar police station Rajat Ray.

The commissionerate police, it may be noted, had raided the Choudwar Circle Jail in Cuttack district on September 3 and seized huge amounts of narcotics and other incriminating articles from it.

A high level inquiry has been ordered into this serious lapse by the prison administration, ADG, Prisons Pradeep Kapoor said. “The inwuiry will be condcuted by a DIG and action will be taken against those found guilty,” he said.
