Hundreds turn up to pay last respect to filmmaker Amiya Patnaik

Bhubaneswar: The mortal remains of veteran Odia film producer and director Amiya Ranjan Patnaik, who passed away at a private hospital in New Delhi yesterday, reached Bhubaneswar in a chopper late last night.

The body has been kept at his residence at Nayapalli IRC Village here. Hundreds of people, including actors, producers, directors, intellectuals and his fans made a beeline to his residence to pay their last respect to Patnaik.

His mortal remains will be taken to Swargadwara in Puri after 12 noon today for the last rites, said family sources.

The filmmaker breathed his last at Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon (Gurugram) at 7.59 am yesterday. He had been undergoing treatment since a last couple of days.

Patnaik, who made his directorial debut with Mamata Mage Mula (1985), is survived by wife Seema Patnaik and son Anupam Patnaik, a known producer in Odia film industry.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed his condolence over Patnaik’s demise.

On his Twitter handle, the CM wrote “Saddened to learn about the passing away of veteran Odia filmmaker and director Amiya Patnaik. His films transcended generations and entertained people of all ages. His presence behind the camera will be missed by one and all in the Odia film industry.”
