Bhubaneswar, Mar 28:

Ibrahim Sharif, the senior official of the Odisha divsion of the Indian Bureau of Mines ( IBM ) who had gone missing since November 25 last year was neither abducted or threatened but had chosen to stay away from his family and office because he was under ‘some kind of a stress’, police sources said after his return to his Bhubaneswar home  this morning.Ibrahim Sharif 1

The Commissionerate Police, which had great many reasons to feel relieved, today said the official had done everything possible to dodge the police after playing the disappearing act.

“He went of his own volition. It is premature to say anything on the exact reason why he went into hiding,” Commissioner of Police Dr RP Sharma told media persons today.

He said Sharif’s last place of stay was Dehradun in Uttarakhand and before that he had visited places like Allahabad, Mughal Sarai, Banaras, Haridwar and JoshiMath.

The twin city police chief said  a team of senior officials of the Commissionerate Police were interrogating Sharif to ascertain the truth  behind his disappearance.

Preliminary interrogation revealed that the IBM official had made all preparations to make sure he remained incommunicado and changed his place of stay frequently during the last four months.

A special police team had got some leads on  his possible whereabouts twice after tracking his mobile phone and Facebook account but had failed to track him down. Four teams of the Commissionerate Police had visited several places in Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Goa and Uttarakhand to look for him but did not meet with any success.

Dr Sharma said the speculation that he could have been kidnapped by the mining mafia because he was inquiring into 45 cases of mining irregularities in the state was without any basis. He, however, did not clarify whether Shariff had faced any kind of threats from anyone in his family or office or whether it was simply a family dispute that had forced him to run away from home.

He said Sharif had last contacted his father who stays in Karnataka on March 23 to inform him of his decision to return to his Bhubaneswar home.

It was Sharif’s wife who informed the Infocity police about his return this morning. The local police then rushed to Sharif’s home to verify and conduct a preliminary interrogation.

The mystery behind Sharif’s disappearance act would be known after detailed interrogation, police sources said.
