IIC caught taking Rs 10, 000 bribe in Odisha capital

The inspector in charge (IIC) of Dhauli Police Station in the Odisha capital Debi Prasad Das was nabbed red-handed by Vigilance officials here today while taking a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a person staying in Lingipur area to drop a case registered against him.

After being alerted by the man, a 15-member team of Vigilance officials conducted a raid at the residence of the IIC located in Pokhariput area and seized the said amount from Das. The raid, being conducted by a vigilance team headed by DSP Debadutta Seth, is continuing at the time of filing this report.

Rakesh Das of Sasan Damodarpur village in Puri district, at present staying at Lingipur here had informed the Vigilance officials that the IIC had demanded Rs 20,000 from him to drop the case being registered against him and save him from arrest.

According to Rakesh, a neighbour named Basudev Patra, owner of Janani Hospital, used to burn bio-medical waste as fuel which used to emit bad smell in the surrounding. Unable to tolerate the foul smell, Rakesh lodged a complaint at the Dhauli police station. Acting on the complaint, the police warned Patra to stop burning bio-medical waste.

“Though Patra stopped burning the fuel, but he lodged a false complaint against me at the same police station alleging that I had threatened him of dire consequences,” alleged Rakesh.

“On April 16 this year, the IIC of Dhauli police station, knowing very well that the case lodged by Patra was false, called me and asked me to give Rs 20,000 as bribe to him to stop the case from going further and to avoid arrest. The IIC also asked me to deposit the money in two instalment- depositing Rs 10,000 today and the rest on Saturday,” alleged Rakesh.

Rakesh informed the matter to the Vigilance officials here. Acting on the complaint, a Vigilance team in a planned way raided the residence of the IIC and caught him red-handed while he was collecting bribe of Rs 10,000 from the complainant.
