IIT Bhubaneswar to offer B. Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) based in Odisha capital would start a degree engineering programme and increase its overall student intake capacity to 260 starting this July.

The premier institute will offer a B.Tech course on Electronics and Communication Engineering from this academic year starting in July. The new department will have an intake capacity of 40 students.

“While the intake capacity of the institute was 180 last year; the number of seats would go up to 260 after the increase starting this July. This marks a 30 percent rise in capacity,” said IIT-Bhubaneswar Director RV Rajkumar.

He also reminded that, IIT – BBS had an intake capacity of 120 students when it came up in February 2009.

In a related development, the annual fee for undergraduate courses in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) has been hiked from Rs.90,000 to Rs.2 lakh per annum, a statement by the HRD ministry said.

The decision to hike the fees follows recommendations of an expert panel which suggested raising it by three times. New fees will be effective from the forthcoming academic session.

The statement, however, added that it will give a total fee waiver for the students that are physically handicapped, belong to SC and ST communities and from families with annual income less than Rs 1 lakh.
