The demolition drive was started in the presence of a magistrate and Municipality officials today for which six platoons of security personnel were deployed to avoid any untoward incident.

Notably, the locals had yesterday opposed the administration’s move. However, they were later convinced and asked not to play any hindrance.

According to reports, hydraulic excavators were used to raze the double-storey building constructed on encroached government land.

Prior to this, the local police had served a notice to Timan, who is in police custody now, to vacate the building constructed on government land within 24 hours.

It may be mentioned the Balangir police had arrested Srikant Kumbhar alias Timan on April 24 this year on charges of  intimidation, assault, forgery, land grabbing, among others registered in the Sadar police and Town police stations here. Over ten cases are pending against him at various police stations.

The notorious criminal and his aides were arrested after a raid conducted by a special police squad comprising Balangir SP Deepak Kumar. The police had seized Rs 3.88 lakh cash, gold ornaments and some papers from Timan’s house.

Timan and his associates allegedly threaten people to sell their land at lower price than the market price. Besides, he was also allegedly involved in tender fixing.
