IMD sounds ‘Red Box’ alert for Odisha for two days

Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Bhubaneswar, May 26:

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday sounded a ‘Red Box’ alert predicting blistering heat wave conditions in Odisha, Jharkhand and coastal Andhra Pradesh for two days beginning today.

Heat Wave Temp

A ‘Red Box’ warning usually means high chances of heat stroke, dehydration and fatality with temperatures inching upwards of 45°C, worsened by a constant dry, torrid wind.

The IMD has warned that temperature in most parts of Odisha would go beyond 45 degree Celsius in these two days.

It may be mentioned that eight places in Odisha had recorded over 45 degrees while Angul had recorded the highest temperature at 47 degrees on Monday. Besides, nine other places in the state had recorded over 40 degrees.

IMD has warned that the temperature in these places would rise further in the next 48 hours.

The IMD in a release has attributed the intense heat wave condition to the weakening of a cyclonic circulation over the Arabian sea.

Talking to the media today, Dr Sarat Chandra Sahu, director, Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar said temperature in some parts of the coastal districts will come down by 2-3 degrees today as there are possibilities of rain or thundershower in these areas due to the formation of a weak trough line stretching from north coastal Andhra Pradesh up to Odisha and Chhattisgarh. Besides, there is also a possibility of Nor’wester at one or two places in the coastal districts.

In the interior districts, there is possibility of a marginal fall in the day temperature in the next 48 hours. However, temperature would hover around 45 degrees in some places, Sahu said.

He, however, said though the condition would prevail in the state up to May 31, the intensity of the heat wave would be comparatively less.

Replying to the Red Box warning by the IMD, Sahu said it is a pictorial symbol of severe heat wave condition.
