Incessant rains wreak havoc in Odisha, infant dies in wall collapse in Balasore

Balasore: A 22-day-old infant died after a wall collapsed here due to incessant rains that wreaked havoc in many parts of the state since Thursday.

The incident occurred at Kundapurastampur village in Kuruda panchayat under Balasore town police limits on Friday.

According to reports, there are 22 houses at tribal slum at the village. At least 13 tribal houses were inundated with rain water due to low pressure formed over the Bay of Bengal that subsequently turned into depression. With the rise of water level in Nayanjodi River, the houses were soaked. The wall of Lakhman Murmu collapsed following which the baby girl died on the spot.

Remuna legislator Gobinda Chandra Das, Kuruda Sarpanch and Kuruda Revenue Inspector reached the spot after the incident.

Notably, many places in Balasore district were marooned following continuous rains due to effect of low pressure.

Besides, heavy rains since past two days played havoc in coastal part of Odisha.
