Indian Cricketers mourn former Odisha Ranji captain Prashant Mohapatra’s demise

Bhubaneswar: Condolences poured in from different quarters soon after news of the demise of Odisha cricket team former captain and BCCI match referee Prasant Mohapatra surfaced today.

Prashant, who was undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar after getting infected with COVID-19 since last month, breathed his last at 7.51 AM today. Ten days before, his father Raghunath Mohapatra, Rajya Sabha member and Padma Vibhusan awardee, succumbed to the virus.

Indian cricketers Harbhajan Singh and Suresh Rains, among many others, took to their Twitter handles to express their grief over Prashant’s death.

Earlier in the day,  AIIMS Bhubaneswar Medical Superintendent Sachidananda Mohanty said, “He was on ventilator support. A four-member team was treating him and constantly monitoring his health condition. Despite all efforts, he succumbed to the virus. Condition of his brother Jashobant is also critical.”

Born on September 1, 1973, Prashant was an opener and right-handed batsman. He debuted as an under-19 player and played against Tamil Nadu.  Later he debuted in Ranji Trophy against Bihar in 1990.

After his retirement, the BCCI had appointed him as a match referee.
