Damages to Ganjam MSME units Rs 500 crore, says OIF

Stating that small and medium enterprises in the industrially backward district of Ganjam have suffered extensive damages due to Cyclone Phailin, Odisha Industries Federation (OIF) has demanded an immediate intervention of the state government and announcement of a package for the rehabilitation of the MSME sector in the district.

In a press release, the OIF vice-chairman (South Zone) Rajendra Mishra has said the preliminary survey of the MSME units across the district by an eight member team of the OIF has put the total losses to be around Rs 500 crore.

Industrial development in the district has been put behind by 30 years due to Cyclone Phailin and neither the state government nor the media appeared to be concerned about it, said the release.

The OIF team during its survey has observed that more than 200 rice mills, 15-20 cashew industries, 20-25 granite industries, 50-60 kewara distilleries and more than 200 other business enterprises in the district have suffered severe damages because of Phailin.

The OIF demands a grant in aid of Rs 500 crore for a proper rehabilitation of affected units, waiver of interest by financial institutions on loans for a year and also waiver of minimum charge by Southco on the small and medium enterprises for one year, the release added.
