Interim stay on appointment of Ravenshaw varsity teachers

The Orissa High Court in an interim order has stayed a notification of the Ravenshaw University with regard to the appointment of professors, readers, and lecturers.

A division bench of the High Court comprising of Justice Indrajit Mohanty and Justice D P Choudhury issued the order Thursday while admitting two writ petitions filed by Dr Sujata Mishra and Dr Manoranjan Behura challenging the fresh recruitment notification published by Ravenshaw University on January 29 after the High Court order on December 9, 2015.

The division bench while serving notices to Ravenshaw University, secretary Higher Education department of the state government and University Grants Commission (UGC) seeking replies, has issued an interim stay order on the recruitment notification till the next hearing in the case.

While lawyer Amit Prasad Bose conducted the case as the counsel for the petitioners, he was assisted by Niranjan Hota.

In a related development, Ravenshaw University vice-chancellor Dr Prakash Chandra Sarangi appeared in person in the High Court in connection with a contempt of court case.

The High Court registry had instituted contempt of court case against the VC for not observing the directions of the High Court issued on December 9, 2015, within the stipulated time.

Conducting a hearing in the matter a division bench comprising of Justice Indrajit Mohanty and Justice D P Choudhury served notices to the department of Higher Education of the state government and UGC.

This apart the court ordered for handing over of a copy of the VC’s affidavit to the UGC counsel.

The next hearing in the matter has been fixed for April 19.
