IOs to use laptops, smartphones for probe: Odisha DGP

Bhubaneswar: Investigating Officers of Odisha Police will soon be using laptops, smartphones and tablets for probing related works, informed DGP R.P. Sharma today after reviewing the Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS) project in the state.

“We are now shifting from intranet to internet. Especially in those areas where connectivity is a problem, we will go for internet with all security features so that security doesn’t become a problem,” Sharma said.

“The big advantage of this will be to have a seamless data flow and also to enable the investigating officers to use this system in their report generation through their laptops, smartphones and tablets. In the present system, we have to operate from the desktop computer installed in the police station building. It is a very restrictive use. So I hope that the investigating officers can use this quite very extensively through their devices,” the top cop said.

The Odisha police has also decided to increase computerization of police stations under which computers will replace the manual registers including station diary.

Out of 612 police stations, 589 are now connected online to the State Data Center in Bhubaneswar. The remaining 23 police stations, mainly Marine Police Stations and Energy Police Stations which are in the process of being established, are yet to be connected, a press note of the State Crime Records Bureau said.
