Irate mob blocks road for six hours after bus runs over girl in Odisha

Tension prevailed in Banbahal area of Odisha’s Sundargarh district after a girl child was run over by a bus on Tuesday morning. Hundreds of locals blocked the  road in the area keeping the corpse of the kid on the road and demanding compensation to the parents of the deceased child.

After about six hours of discussion with the locals, the protesters agreed to take the corpse of the girl child from the spot. The driver of the bus was arrested in the evening.

Sources said the bus, Jai Mata Di (No.OD-16-8898) was on its way to Balisankara when it ran over the three-year Pius Sa, who was crossing the road at the time, at around 10.30 am on Tuesday. After the accident, the driver of bus ran away from the spot.

Locals of Banbahal area gathered at the spot and informed Kinjrikela police outpost about the death of the girl child. Police immediately reached the spot and started investigating the matter.

But locals staged a protest there keeping the corpse of the girl child on the spot and demanding that the owner of the bus come for discussion and provides compensation to the family of the deceased.

After getting information Sundargarh Sub Divisional Police Officer P.K.Mohanty also reached the spot and discussed with locals. After about six hours of protest, when the locals were assured that Rs.10000/- will be provided by the owner of the bus to the family members of child, they agreed to take the corpse. It was also assured them that Rs.5000/- will be provided to them from Red Cross.

On Tuesday evening, police arrested driver of the bus, who has been identified as Sumanta Ka (27).

“Now the situation on the spot has come back to normalcy. We have arrested the driver of the bus and are now investigating the case,” said B.Bag, Sub Inspector, Kinjrikela Police Station.
