Itishree murder: SC stay on action against ex-Odisha DGP

The Supreme Court today granted a stay on action against former Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) Prakash Mishra in the Itishree Pradhan murder case.

The CBI, currently investigating the murder of the former teacher of Tikri primary school in Rayagada district, submitted details of the progress made in its investigations to the court in a sealed envelope while praying to the court for six months’ time to complete its investigations.

The court, however, directed the CBI to complete its investigations within three months and nab the culprits in the case.

Mishra had moved the Supreme Court after Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) on July 29 last vacated its stay granted against the show cause notice to him in the Itishree Pradhan murder case.

Mishra’s counsel Biswajit Singh had moved the Supreme Court seeking a direction to CAT to keep its earlier granted stay in force claiming that his client did not expect any transparent and impartial justice from the state of Odisha.

In his application to the court, Singh alleged that the state government had conspired to embarrass his client as well as tarnish his image at the fag end of his illustrious career in government service.

Notably, on July 31, 2013 lady teacher Itishree Pradhan had spoken to then Odisha DGP Prakash Mishra, who is presently serving as DG CRPF and told her about her problems. Allegedly, Mishra did not take any action in the matter. Therefore, after Itishree’s death, the Rajesh Verma Committee probing the Itishree Pradhan murder case served a notice to DGP Prakash Mishra seeking details about the matter from him within 15 days.

Poiting out that there was no complaint/allegations against him in this connection, Mishra had moved the CAT and secured a stay on the notice. Following an application by the state government in the CAT for vacating the stay claiming that by virtue of its stay order no action could be taken against Mishra, CAT vacated its stay order.
