Berhampur: As many as 43 persons from Berhampur Circle Jail here have tested positive for the deadly COVID-19. Of the 43 cases, 33 are prisoners and remaining 10 are jail staff including the Jailer.
After detection of the positive cases, the prisoners have been kept under isolation in the jail campus. Similarly, the 10 staff have been asked to remain under home quarantine. All of them have been advised to get admitted to COVID hospital for treatment if they develop any symptoms.
DIG Raghunath Majhi said after detection of the positive cases, the CDMO wrote a letter to the Jail Superintendent and assured that doctors will be sent to the jail for health checkup of the COVID-19 patients frequently.
Sources said on July 19, swab samples of 50 prisoners and 92 staff of the jail were collected for COVID-19 test. Today, reports of 33 prisoners and 10 jail staff came positive and all are asymptomatic.
Earlier, 20 prisoners and two staff of the jail had tested positive for the virus. The first case from the jail was reported on June 6.
Today, Ganjam district reported 371 fresh cases taking the total count to 6,362, including 2,287 active cases. Besides, 62 patients have so far succumbed to the virus.
