Japanese Encephalitis death toll touches 100 in Odisha’s Malkangiri

Malkangiri, Nov 9:

The killer Japanese Encephalitis (JE) claimed life of one more child in Odisha’s Malkangiri today taking the death toll in the vector-borne disese to 100 in 62 days in the district.

The deceased was identified as Mukesh Sodi (2) of Kudeiguda village under Korkonda block in the district.

The child died while undergoing treatment at the District Headquarters Hospital (ICU).

Sources said, as many as 6 children affected by JE are undergoing treatment in ICU of the DHH and 30 kids in JE ward of the hospital.

Meanwhile, members of Zilla Adivasi Samaj Mahasangh gheraoed the Malkangiri Collector’s office today protesting the failure of the state government to curb the disese.

They reportedly tried to barge into the office but were stopped by policemen. The agitators also staged a road blockade on Malkangiri-Kalimela road disrupting vehicular movement on the route for a while.

The tribal body had resorted to a 12-hour Malkangiri bandh yesterday demanding compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the family of the deceased.
