Jean-Claude Perrier’s ‘Like Barbarians in India’ released

New Delhi: Niyogi Books, in collaboration with the Embassy of France, French Institute in India, and Oxford Bookstore had organised a book discussion with the author Jean-Claude Perrier and academic and writer Aditi Sriram who wrote Beyond the Boulevard, at Oxford Bookstore, Connaught Place here last evening.

During the discussion, Aditi Sriram pointed out that as the book takes a look at the works of four French writers who had written about India at various points in the 20th century, the book beautifully documents, perhaps accidentally, parts of India that remain unchanged throughout the century and parts that changed little by little.

Author Jean-Claude Perrier revealed that every time he visits India, he feels that he gets to experience a very small part of the vastness that is Indian culture. He went on to discuss how the title of the book had been inspired by the title of the book Barbarians in Asia, penned by Henri Michaux, one of the four French authors that the book takes a look at. M Perrier also recounted his first meeting with Pandit Ravi Shankar and how his own love for India grew over the years.

Trisha De Niyogi, COO & Director, Niyogi Books, when asked about publishing the book, says, ‘This is a little book with a large heart. In its exploration of the connection four French writers—Loti, Michaux, Malraux and Gide—felt for India, as well as the author’s attachment to this country, it exemplifies the warm spirit of interpersonal connection, which reaffirms our essential humanity.’

It was revealed that another book discussion has been planned around the book in Kolkata at Alliance Française on March 1.
