Jewellery worth Rs.20 lakh burgled from Delhi house

New Delhi, April 13 :

The house of a Central Public Works Department (CPWD) official was burgled of Rs.1.5 lakh in cash and jewellery worth over Rs.20 lakh Sunday morning when the officer had gone to church with his family, police said.

The incident took place in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar between 9.30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Sunil Samuel, who stays in Malviya Nagar’s M block, told police he had left his house around 8.30 a.m. and returned around 1.30 p.m. and found the lock of the main door broken and the house ransacked.

“He told police that around Rs.1.5 lakh in cash and jewellery worth approximately Rs.20 lakh was burgled from his house when he, along with his family, had gone to attend church service in Vasant Kunj area of south Delhi,” said a police official.

Samuel, who is an administrative officer in CPWD, informed investigators that he had purchased the jewellery for his niece whose marriage is to be held May 1.

Police said prima facie it seems the burglary was committed by more than three people, and someone close to the family might be involved.
