Karwa Chauth is a festival celebrated by Hindu women on the fourth day after Purnima (a full moon) in the month of Kartika. On this occasion, married women, especially in North India, observe fast from sunrise to moonrise for the safety and longevity of their husbands.
During this festival ‘Sargi’ plays a crucial role. Before the dawn, married women will have to eat food items served in ‘Sargi Thaali’ prepared by their mother-in-laws.
Experts advise to eat a nutritious ‘Sargi Thaali’ before going for a day-long vrat. These food items will surely make the ‘Sargi Thaali’ special and complete in all respect.
a) Dry fruits: During every vrat in the country people usually consume dry fruits to get themselves energised and make themselves full. Soaked pumpkin seed, watermelon seeds and almonds should be in Sargi Thaali will provide the required nutrition to the person who will be observing a day-long fast.
b) Fresh fruits: As fresh fruits provide high water content to body, it is always recommended to eat enough fruits before fast. While going for a nirjala fast, fresh fruits including pomegranate, orange and other citrus fruits will prevent dehydration.
c) Stuffed roti with curd: To prevent acidity during the fast, it is advisable to eat stuffed roti with cooked veggies or curd. The food item in the ‘Sargi Thaali’ will help someone get the protein and let the person go for longer fast.
d) Sweets: It’s always good to start a fast after eating some sweets. Roasted vermicelli or sooji halwa will be better option to get the energy and purity of mind.
