‘Kidnapped’ man jumps out of car, dies at Saheed Nagar police station in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: A man died under mysterious circumstances at the Saheed Nagar police station in Odisha capital, last night. The deceased was identified as Bichitra Palei (42). He was a resident of Gadakana here.

Police arrested a brother-sister duo in this connection. They were identified as Netramani Behera and Batakrushna Behera.

As per eyewitnesses, Bichitra jumped out of a moving car at Vani Vihar Square at around 9 PM and ran towards the Utkal University while he was chased by a youth and a woman.

As Bichitra screamed for help saying that he was being kidnapped, passersby rescued him and nabbed the chasers, who are residents of Shantipalli slum in the city.

The locals took all of them to the Saheed Nagar police station, where Bichitra lost consciousness. Cops rescued Bichitra and rushed him to the Capital Hospital. However, he was declared dead at the government healthcare facility.

While mystery shrouded the death of the man, police said the reason of the demise can be ascertained after post-mortem.

On the other hand, the accused persons said Bichitra had borrowed Rs 3 lakh from them and was not repaying them the amount. They were bringing him from Patia to the police station. However, he jumped out of the vehicle and started running, the accused said.
