Koraput, Sep 4

Demanding a permanent bench of High Court in Jeypore, lawyers of Koraput, Malkangiri, Nawarangpur and Rayagada districts, under the aegis of Koraput Scheduled District Central Coordination and Action Committee, resorted to a day-long economic blockade today.

In Koraput, the district bar association has also called for a 12-hour bandh in support of the demand. Movement of vehicles on NH-26 was affected as members of the bar association picketed at several places

Train services in the district have also been affected in a big way. Trains scheduled to leave  Koraput station in early morning were delayed by several hours as agitating advocates squatted on the tracks.

President of Koraput Bar Association Nihar Patnaik said that Koraput deserves a permanent HC bench for the benefit of the poor litigants and common men of the scheduled area, which has been neglected in every sphere.

Traders across the district downed shutters and joined the agitation. Educational institutions, banks, business establishments and government offices also remained closed.

Court proceedings were hit in the four districts due to the cease work by members of bar associations. In Jeypore, advocates have been striking for the past 13 days.
