Kunduli suicide: NHRC orders probe, seeks report in 15 days

Bhubaneswar: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has ordered for a probe into the alleged gangrape of a minor tribal girl at Kunduli in Odisha’s Koraput district and her suicide besides seeking a report in this regard within 15 days.

Acting on a petition filed by lawyer Radhakanta Tripathy, the human rights body directed its DG (Investigation Division) to constitute a team of investigators, conduct a spot probe into the matter and submit report within 15 days.

It has also asked Additional deputy general of police (Human Rights Protection Cell) to submit a report explaining the circumstances under which the victim committed suicide.

The ADG (HRPC) has been instructed to furnish all relevant documents including the statement of the victim, medical reports, treatment record, details of counselling besides the order of Orissa High Court on the matter if any, within six weeks.

Notably, a minor tribal girl of Sorisapadar village, who was allegedly gang raped by a group of security personnel on October 10 last year when she was returning from Kunduli market near the village in Koraput, committed suicide at her house on January 22. The incident had triggered massive public outrage across the state.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had ordered for a judicial probe into the incident.
