Vigilance raid on FM varsity in Odisha over teacher appointment scam

Despite resistance by the university staff, a Vigilance department team seized several incriminating documents during its raid on Fakir Mohan (FM) University here on Friday in connection with their investigation into the alleged irregularities in recruitment of lecturers earlier this year.fm-university-orissa-3-arts-science

The team, headed by deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Madhusudan Behera, has asked the university authorities to submit certain other relevant documents within one week, sources said.

The Vigilance team faced resistance during its raid as the university employees reportedly hesitated to hand over related documents. However, things changed as the anti-corruption officials acted a little tough.

“We were thinking of calling in a magistrate when the university staff refused to cooperate with us. They, however, fell in line and we got the documents. We have asked them to give us the remaining papers within seven days,” DSP Behera told reporters after the raid was over.

The documents which the vigilance was looking for was the list of applicants for teachers’ posts, the comparative merit list prepared for the short-listed candidates for appointment to various in the departments of Bio-technology, Business Management and Environmental Science in April this year when Prof Kumarbar Das was the vice-chancellor.

Odisha Sun Times had reported earlier that norms were flouted by the university authorities to show ‘undue favour’ to some selected candidates.

Some well known academics had also alleged that the appointments were made at a time when the model code of conduct for general elections was in force. Several members of the university Senate and Syndicate too had expressed concern over the issue.
