Padma Shri conferred on Odisha music legend Prafulla Kar

President Pranab Mukherjee today conferred the prestigious Padma Shri on legendary singer and music director of Odisha, Prafulla Kar, in a glittering ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi.

Padma Shri is the fourth highest civilian award in the Republic of India, after the Bharat Ratna, the Padma Vibhushan and the Padma Bhushan.

Prior to this award, Kar has won other prestigious awards and honours which include Jayadeva Award (2004), D. Litt (Utkal University), Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja Award (2009), FitFat Biscope Award (2011), Swarna Sanjibani Award (2008), Balakrushna Das Award (2010), Parampara Award (2012), Kadambini Award (2012).

He has also won Best Music Director award eight times during 1975-85 and best playback singer award in 1978 by Odisha State Film Awards conferred by the state Culture department .

“One shouldn’t work to win awards. I have never done so in my career. We should work with honesty, integrity and dedication and should always aspire for the best we can do. Awards and recognition will follow. I am happy to have been conferred with this prestigious award,” Kar said.

In a long career spanning over five decades, the 76-year old Kar has directed the music for more than 70 Odia movies and four Bengali movies.
