Lightning takes three lives in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district

Shyamakhunta/Baisinga: As many as three persons died today due to lightning in Mayurbhanj.

Two deceased women were identified as 55-year-old Malati Mahanta from Bahadurpur village and 41-year-old Parbati Singh from Pandura village, both under Shayamakhunta block of the district.

The third deceased girl was identified as 18-year-old Ranjita Singh, daughter of Jatia Singh from Deopada village under Baisinga police limits in Mayurbhanj, a senior police official expressed.

In the first incident, Malati and Parbati had taken their goats in the afternoon to a nearby farmland for grazing grass, when lightning with thundershower occurred leading to their untimely death.

On being informed, some co-villagers rushed the two injured women Malati and Parbati to a hospital in Baripada for treatment in critical condition, where doctors declared them ‘brought dead’.

Subsequently, Shyamakhunta revenue inspector (RI) met family members of the two deceased women and assured them granting of ex-gratia money as per norms of the State government.

In the second incident, lightning hit Ranjita when she was returning home along with her mother and two other women of Deopada from their farmlands. Three of them were injured in the incident and Ranjita became critical. Following which, she was rushed to Baisinga hospital, but to no avail.
