Liquor to be banned in Odisha? Govt has plans in this regard, says Minister

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Social Security Minister Nityananda Gond today said the state government has plans to make Odisha liquor-free.

Speaking to media persons on the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse, the minister said, “Liquor has been banned in several states at the government-level. Our government will also try to do the same. We will hold discussion in this regard with Excise and other departments to make Odisha liquor-free in a phase-wise manner.”

The state government will also take steps in the coming days to lessen consumption of drugs in order to create a healthy society, the minister said.

Earlier, a social media post claiming about ban on liquor across the state had gone viral. The post claimed that the state government would impose ban on Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and country liquor from August 15.

However, the Information and Public Relations Department posted a clarification on ‘X’, stating that the post was false and misleading. The department appealed the people not to believe it.
