Low pressure likely to turn depression, heavy rain predicted in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Diwali celebrations might get dampened in Odisha as the local meteorological centre has predicted heavy rainfall in the state during the next 24 hours as the low pressure over Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a depression.

“Yesterday’s Well Marked low pressure area over Central and adjoining South Bay of Bengal now lies over West Central Bay of Bengal and neighborhood at 0830 hours IST today, the 18th October,2017. It is very likely to concentrate into a Depression during next 24 hours. It is very likely to move North-Northwestwards and reach Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh Coasts by tomorrow evening,” a bulletin of the meteorological centre said today.

Rain or thunder shower likely to occur at most places in districts of Coastal Odisha and at many places in the districts of Interior Odisha during next 24 hours, it forecasted.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall likely to occur at one or two places in the districts of South Odisha and heavy rainfall at one or two places in the districts of North Odisha during next 24 hours, it warned.

Strong and gusty surface wind from Northeasterly direction with speed reaching 45 to 55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph likely to prevail along and off Odisha coast.

Sea condition likely to be rough to very rough along and off Odisha coast for which fishermen have been advised not to venture into sea.

On the other hand, it has issued lightning and thunderstorm warning for Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Khorda, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Kalahandi and Kandhamal districts between 3 pm and 7 pm today.
