Cuttack, Jan 19:

For a moment, onlookers wondered if there was an international cricket match going on at Odisha’s iconic Barabati stadium after witnessing serpentine queues and mad rush to enter the sporting complex here on Sunday.

Over 32, 000 job aspirants arrived from various parts of the state to appear for the written test for the 53 posts in Group-D cadre in the Office of the District Judge, Cuttack on contractual basis for a period of six years.

The mad rush for the recruitment drive put the authorities conducting the examination and the police personnel on their toes as nearly one lakh people, including parents and relatives of aspirants, from across the state descended on the stadium. While those accompanying the candidates had to wait outside, the job seekers had to stand in a queue from 8 AM to get entry into the stadium for the examination scheduled to start at 11 am.

From the entry point, the candidates were given answer sheets and questions were announced with the help of a loud speaker after the deafening crowd took their seats inside the stadium.

Though the examination was for one hour, it took at least two hours to get in and an equivalent time to get out of the examination venue. In view of the huge response to the advertisement published last year, the authorities had decided to carry out the examination at the stadium for smooth conduct of the test.

However, applicants expressed their displeasure over the recruitment process at the stadium as they accused the authorities of failing to conduct it in a proper manner.

Applicants Pradeep Charan Singh (Athagarh), Sujata Mohanty (Baleswar), Yashoketan Sahu (Phulbani), Sanjay Patra (Kendrapara), Swagatika Dehuri (Pipili) and Prashan Parida (Jajpur), among many others, complained of irregularities in the conduct of the examination.

The police personnel and the traffic staff had a difficult time regulating the traffic and the crowd.

Sources said a total of 32, 673 applicants sat for the written test at the stadium for assessment of their elementary knowledge in English and Odia.

As the minimum qualification was at least Class-VIII and maximum a matriculate pass and the age limit was from 18 to 37 years, a large number of applicants turned up for the selection process.

Of the 53 vacancies to be filled up, 11 posts are to be filled from unreserved category, 12 from scheduled caste (SC), 15 from scheduled tribe (ST), and 14 from the socially and economically backward class (SEBC) category. The successful candidates would have to appear for the viva voce test for which dates would be announced later.

The unprecedented turn out at the Barabati stadium paints the picture of the grim situation of unemployment in the state.
