Bhubaneswar: Shree Lingaraj Temple Administration authorities decided the timing for placing the divine Mahadeepa atop the centuries old temple here on auspicious Mahashivaratri on February 18 this year.
As per decision at a meeting coordinated by Lingaraj Temple Executive Officer Bhavani Prasad Mishra, the Mahadeepa will be lifted atop the temple at 10 pm followed by Sahanamela and Chariprahara rituals.
According to temple sources, the main door of the temple will be opened at 2.30 am. The rituals like Mangala Alati and Abakash will be completed between 3 am and 3.30 am. The devotees will be allowed to enter into the temple for darshan of Lord Lingaraj from 4 am to 11 am.
The Chhamu Pariskar, Mahasnana Besha, Surjya Puja, Dwarapala Puja, Shreejew and Thakurani Ballabha and Sakala Dhupa rituals will be held from 11 am. The Sandhya Alati and Cherafita niti of Lord Lingaraj and will be conducted from 7.10 pm. The Mahadeepa will be lifted at 10 pm following Sandhya Dhupa and Trthajala Anayana rituals at 8.55 pm.
The officials at the meeting retained previous year’s timing for Mahashivaratri this year. While Badu Nijog president and secretary and other representatives attended the meeting, servitors of Brahmana Nijog and Samartha Nijog president and secretary abstained from the meeting.
Maha Shivratri is celebrated on the Chaturdashi Tithi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Falgun. Observers of Maha Shivratri vrat resort to fasting on this day and take food next day. They can only consume fruits and milk during the fast.
Devotees take second bath in the evening before doing Shiva Puja or visiting temple. The puja should be done during night and devotees should break the fast next day after taking bath.
Shivaratri puja can be performed once or four times during the night. The whole night duration is divided into four prahars. It is advised to practice meditation on this day and chant ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ as many times as possible during the whole day.
