Maiden flight from Rangeilunda to Bhubaneswar on March 5

Bhubaneswar: The flight service between Bhubaneswar and Berhampur, the two major cities of Odisha, is all set to commence on March 5.

Sources said that a non-scheduled flight will take off from Rangeilunda airstrip on outskirts of Berhampur city to Bhubaneswar on trial basis on the occasion of birth anniversary of former Chief Minister late Biju Patnaik which is being observed as the Panchayati Raj Day in Odisha.

As per the report, the non-scheduled flight is expected to leave Bhubaneswar airport at 9.30 am and arrive at Rangeilunda airstrip at 10.20 am on March 5. In return direction, the flight will depart Rangeilunda at 10.40 am and reach Bhubaneswar at 11.30 am.

Similarly, the flight will flew at 9 am from Rangeilunda on March 8. It will arrive at Bhubaneswar at 10 am. The flight will return to Bhubaneswar at 10.20 am and reach the state capital at 11.20 am on March 8.

With only few hours in hand for the launching of much-awaited flight service, the State Commerce and Transport Principal Secretary Usha Padhee and Chief Engineer (Roads) Tara Prasad Mishra reviewed the status of Rangeilunda airstrip yesterday. Along with reviewing the terminal work of the airstrip and runway condition, she directed the officials of concerned department to give importance to the safety aspect.

The Rangeilunda airstrip has been included under Udaan and Rural Connectivity scheme of the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The flights will be operated from the airstrip in the first phase. With an expansion and development of the airstrip, the air traffic will be given more importance in second and third phase in coming days, said Padhee.

She further said that decision has been made to launch air service from the airstrip from March 5. However, the district administration will take a final call on flight operation schedule.

A 9-seater flight will flew from the airstrip very soon, informed Keerthi Vasan V, Chief Development Officer (CDO), Zilla Parishad, Ganjam.
