A court in Odisha’s Sundargarh district on Friday awarded seven years’ rigorous imprisonment to a person on charges of attempting to murder a fellow villager in October, 2010.
Additional Sessions Judge, Bonei Ashish Kumar Tripathy also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on the accused failing which he will have to undergo another six months of imprisonment.
According to sources, the convict Baneswar Kishan (40) of Kenabheta village under Bonai police station limits had attacked Purna Chandra Kishan (52) of the same village with an axe while he was sleeping on the varandah of his house on October 28, 2010. As Purna shouted for help, his wife Ketaki rushed to the spot. Seeing her, Baneswar fled the area.
Purna, who sustained grievous injuries on his face, was admitted to Bonai hospital from where he was shifted to Rourkela Government Hospital.
Acting on the complaint lodged by Puna’s wife the next day, Bonai police registered a case under section 307 of IPC and arrested Baneswar.
Police, during interrogation, came to know that the incident was the outcome of a land dispute.
The accused, who was remanded to judicial custody, was later released on bail.
