Man strangulates mentally sick son, kills self in Odisha

Panic gripped Gudianali area in Odisha’s Dhenkanal town following the death of a man who committed suicide after strangulating his mentally challenged son this morning.

According to reports, Shakti Prasad Acharya, an employee of Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (RWSS) had recently taken voluntary retirement from his service.

However, he was in a state of depression as his son Bidhu Bhusan Acharya (32) was mentally challenged.

Fed up with his prolonged treatment, Shakti took the extreme step by strangulating his son with a rope while he was asleep this morning.

After committing the crime, the dejected father committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of the roof of his house.

Following information, a team of police of Dhenkanal Town Police rushed to the spot with a scientific team for an on-the-spot investigation.

Police later seized a suicidal note of Shakti.

“My son was in a state of depression for several years as his son needed frequent medical check-up. Unable to sustain the pressure, he took the extreme step”, said Tara Prasad Acharya, son of Shakti.

“Bidhu Bhusan was suffering from psychiatric disorder since last 15 years. As he could not recover from his illness despite several treatment, the frustrated father decided to take the extreme step”, said Pradip Kumar Sahu, IIC of Town Police station.

The police have sent the bodies for post-mortem. On the basis of the report, police would take appropriate action, he added.
