Manhunt on to nab two absconding arms smugglers : CP

The Quick Action Team (QAT) of the Commissionerate Police began a manhunt on Sunday to nab two members of arms smugglers’ gang  who managed to escape during a raid on the hotel in Unit-IV area here on Saturday.

Eight persons belonging to the gang were arrested on Saturday, including one who was shot in his leg in an encounter with the police.

Twin city Commissioner of Police (CP) Dr R P Sharma today informed that the QAT has already launched a manhunt to nab the other two members of the gang who are involved in several criminal cases in different police station areas in the State.

During the interrogation of the eight nabbed criminals, the police have managed to get the the name of only one of teh two absconding criminals. He is called Laxmi Jena and hails from Ganjam district.

Quoting the statements of the criminals during interrogation, the CP said all the criminals are from Ganjam district and they had come to Bhubaneswar with 4 to 5 fire-arms yesterday to sell them to some anti-socials in the city. Though they have seized one sophisticated gun from the nabbed criminals, the rest may have been taken away by the absconding criminal Laxmi.

Efforts are on to nab them along with the guns, he added.

The CP  said the members of the gang were supplying fire arms after procuring  it from different illegal gun factories in Jharkhand and Bihar. They were selling these guns at prices ranging from Rs 60,000 to Rs 1 lakh each to  anti-socials in the city.

“After getting information about the arms deal, our team had conducted raids on hotel Swagat Palace in the city yesterday,” he added.

The nabbed arms smugglers Mrutunjay Sahu (49) of Polasara, Siddharth Nayak alias Babu (21) of Aska, Tuna Swain (25) of Kodala, Kuna Barik of Kabisuryanagar, Bulu Patra (30) of Aska, Suryanarayan Padhi of Polasara ( all from Ganjam district) and Ramesh Pradhan (24) of Ranpur in Nayagarh district were forwarded to a local court here today.

Jitendra Swain (26) of Aska who had received bullet injury in his leg in the encounter is still under treatment at the SCB  Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
