According to reports, the ill-fated bus carrying at least 38 members of Bharati Gananatya (an opera party) plunged 200 feet from the Tilaebani Gaelo ghat when it was on its way from Deogarh to Remta.

At least 10 occupants in the bus were feared killed in the tragic incident. The number of casualties is feared to increase, sources said.

“The bus carrying 30-40 passengers fell off the ghat. We have pressed fire and ambulance into service for rescue operations. It appears that the driver failed to negotiate the steep turn in the ghat as a result of which it plunged almost 200 feet below,” Deogarh ASP Debiprasad Das said.

Two fire extinguishing vehicles, ambulance and generators were used in the rescue operation. Besides, 30-40 police personnel, SDPO, Tehsildar, Revenue Inspector and other officials were in the spot to assist in the rescue operation.

The rescue operations were affected due to the hilly terrain, forested area and low visibility, sources added.

At least five injured passengers were rescued and admitted to district headquarters hospital here. The rescue operation was on till the time of filing of the report.
