Maoists present in Odisha’s Rayagada-Kalahandi border: SP

The encounter between the police and the Maoists near a village in Niyamgiri area on the Rayagada-Kalahandi border in Odisha on Wednesday afternoon has revealed the movement of Maoist cadres in the area, said Rayagada SP K Siva Subramani in a press briefing here this morning.

“Going by the seized Maoist literature, which are written in Hindi, there is little doubt about the presence of Maoist cadres of Bansadhara-Ghumusar-Nagavali Division in the area,” the SP said, adding that there is every possibility of some Maoist casualties during the encounter.

Giving details about the encounter, he said on getting credible information about the movement of a group of armed CPI Maoists in Balasaraj village in Niyamgiri area on the borders of Rayagada and Kalahandi districts, a joint combing operation was launched by the police of both the districts on Wednesday.

During the combing operation, the Maoists suddenly opened fire at the police near Semlabhata village under Lanjigarh police station limits at about 3 PM. Security personnel retaliated with full force, he said.

Unable to sustain the counter attack by the police, the Maoists fled the area. Police later seized one switch board, one tiffin bomb, four electric detonators, electric wirse measuring 30 metres, a walkie-talkie set, three torch lights, a radio, polythene sheets, some Maoist literatures and books from the spot.

Meanwhile, combing operation in the area has been intensified.
