Marriage cancelled after baraatis stab bride’s family members in Odisha’s Balangir, 2 detained

While the bride's brother is critical and has been rushed to a hospital in Raipur (Chhattisgarh), the other relative suffered injuries as well.

Kantabanji/Balangir: In an unfortunate incident, a marriage was cancelled after a few members of the groom’s baraat (wedding procession) stabbed the bride’s brother and a relative in Muribahal village of Turekela in Odisha’s Balangir district late on Friday night. While the bride’s brother is critical and has been rushed to a hospital in Raipur (Chhattisgarh), the other relative suffered injuries as well.

As per reports, the groom’s wedding procession was coming from Kukurbeda in Raipur. As they reached the bride’s place, an altercation broke out between both the parties over some dance during the baraat. As the spat got uglier, a few members from the groom’s side suddenly brandished a knife and attacked the brother and a relative of the bride. Both the victims were hurt after which the bride’s brother, who was grievously hurt, rushed to a hospital in Raipur.

“The wedding procession of my sister in-law was about to reach our place when I asked my husband and two kids to stand at the entrance to receive the groom’s side. My son out of excitement went and danced in the baraat. But some of the baraatis pushed him. As he fell, my husband went to pick him up. When he asked the baraatis to be sober, they attacked him with a knife. My other son went to rescue his father but they attacked him too and the knife hit his eye. We had to cancel the wedding. If this is their behaviour  even before the marriage, how will my sister in-law be treated after that?,” said Sabitri Tandi, the bride’s sister in-law.

“My son is critical. The barratis attacked my nephew too and his hand is fractured. We  had gone over half a km with snacks and refreshments to receive the groom and this is their behaviour,” said the bride’s father Belakham Tandi.

After the situation flared up, the wedding was cancelled and the groom had to return. Meanwhile, police has detained two people from the wedding procession for their alleged involvement. The duo is being interrogated and further investigation is on, official sources informed.
